Oromo Community Cultural Festival Celebrated in Melbourne, Australia.

(OLF News, December 22,2008) An Oromo community cultural festival was being celebrated on Sunday, December 21, 2008 in Melbourne Australia, OLF News correspondent reported from area. Several hundreds of Oromos and non-Oromos have attended the festival which was conducted on Sunday afternoon from 1:00 – 7:00 PM local time in the center of Melbourne city at a place known as “Federation Square”.

Highlights of the celebration of the festival include, Oromo cultural dances from all regions and sub regions of Oromia, fashion show, children’s show and activities and cultural clothing shows. Several pamphlets explaining the Oromo culture, introducing our country Oromia, the Oromo people and their life style have been distributed to Oromos and non-Oromos who came to be part of the celebration of the festival. Moreover, an Oromo music band show and several Oromo flags hanged around the Federation Square and on other streets of the city have added to the beauty of this cultural festival. Furthermore, a photograph exhibit explaining the suffering of the Oromo people in their own land by the current and successive Ethiopian regimes, an exhibit of the different household utensils, tools and clothes from all parts of Oromia, and a special show about Oromian Coffee, the main export of the current and the previous Ethiopian regimes was presented and introduced to non-Oromos by Oromo women.

OLF News correspondent added that on this festival which has been the first of its kind in Australia, several Oromos from Australian cities such as Sydney, from Europe such as Newzealand and many non-Oromos from Melbourne have been participated. Moreover several slogans such as “Oromia Shall be Free!”, “Peace for Oromos and Oromia!”, “Victory to the Oromo People!”, were being chanted by the participants of the festival.

The successful Oromo festival celebration of Melbourne by Oromos and other friends of Oromos in and around the city is seen as a step forward in the struggle of the Oromo people for justice, democracy, equality, and national self-determination, and in the struggle of the Oromo people to re-gain and make known their hidden and lost identity which has been deliberately suppressed by the current and past successive Ethiopian regimes.
